Probation officer turned beauty executive lets women shine and grow

goGLOW President and CEO Melanie Richards learned the lessons of resilience, tenacity and hard work early on. Raised by a single mother in the northern Minnesota town of Esko, Richards watched her teenage mother of two persevere from welfare checks and food stamps to college graduation and homesteading. of business. “She didn’t skip a beat,” Richards said of her mother. “I feel so lucky to have witnessed his growth and success.”

Early in his career, Richards served as Hennepin County’s probation officer and a member of its crisis intervention team. For more than a decade, she worked tirelessly to change the way the criminal justice system treated victims of domestic violence. Passionate and dedicated to making a difference, Richards has helped countless women get back on their feet and find the confidence to take control of their lives.

“Sometimes life is tough, and a simple beauty treatment can help make things a little easier.” Melanie Richards, CEO of goGLOW

Inspired by the transformation she saw in the women she served, she decided to turn to beauty, another industry where female empowerment is achieved. Continuing her daytime criminal justice work, Richards set aside nights and weekends to study skincare and entrepreneurship at the Aveda Institute. Although she was unsure of her exact path, she remained committed to empowering women and helping them feel good about themselves.

A light bulb moment

As she prepared for her graduation celebration, Richards wanted to walk the stage looking sunny with no real exposure to the sun. “At that time, the only sunless tanning option was to get doused with a poisonous, fake-looking spray. It was like a human car wash, she laughs while lamenting the familiar orange hue of self-tanners. Eventually Richards found a makeup artist to airbrush a tan all over her body, she liked the look of it but didn’t like the price.

She searched high and low for a cost-effective and healthier alternative, only to find that such a service did not exist. “I was determined to discover, or in this case, invent a better solution,” she says. Richards experimented with plant-based materials, creating a spray formulation that replaced chemicals with natural plant-based ingredients. Then she developed a unique spray technique that created the flawless tan she was looking for.

After months of testing her product on friends and family, news of her improved tan began to spread. To meet the growing demand for her services, she built a mobile salon and named it goGLOW.

Since then, goGLOW has continued to elevate sunless spray tanning to a professional skincare treatment. Through oxidation, Richards’ exclusive formulation delivers a natural-looking tan without dangerous chemicals.

A stimulating opportunity

With a loyal following and rave reviews (including the coveted Allure Magazine Best of Beauty award), the business has grown to include four salons, three in Minneapolis and one in Chicago. Now, Richards is determined to bring her confidence-boosting treatment to people across the country.

By providing franchise opportunities with a low barrier to entry and a good return on investment, she hopes to inspire people to join her movement of instilling confidence in others through beauty. “Sometimes life is tough, and a simple beauty treatment can help make things a little easier,” she says.
